There is a killer in our midst. HIV/AIDS is taking the lives of our children and corroding the fabric of our society. More than 1 million American men, women, and children are currently living with HIV/AIDS without regard for age, race, sexual orientation, creed, religion, or lack of religion. One of our most effective tools in fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS is communication. The more we talk about HIV/AIDS in our communities, the more we open our hearts and minds to those infected and affected by the disease. We must shed light on the realities of HIV/AIDS – how it is spread, who is at risk, available options for treatment, and what we can all do to help fight this deadly disease. — World AIDS Day 2006
Today is World AIDS Day. These nameless thousands who suffer or die fighting this cruel disease are not only in a country far away — They are in my city, in my workplace, and in my family. AIDS is not discriminating it affects women, men, and children alike. I know, particularly at the holidays we don’t want to talk about AIDS, but as we all look at our families and give thanks for their health – no time is better than the present.
There are so ways to make a difference. I have said over and over, “I should volunteer” or “I should attend that rally” or “€œI should read more about the disease” — but I don’t. I continue through my days and let this issue go dormant. We can’t do that any longer. You don’t have to be a saint or a martyr. Just say you care. Take a stand and use your voice for change. Now, action doesn’t have to mean you move to Africa, donate millions of dollars, or spend countless hours in a hospital you can work for change and have fun too. For goodness sake, you can make a indifference by shopping at the GAP NO EXCUSES!
