Girl Gadgets!

February 4th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Hi folks! vtgirl here. So this site is devoted to things that get us all excited. Where to begin. . .

Well, let’s start with tech talk. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of great gadget websites out there: Gizmodo, Woot , and Slashdot are on my daily reading list. One of my pet issues is women and the internet — so rather than reviewing every gadget site known to “man” — I’d like to talk about gadget sites focused on women.

Now, I can already feel several men rolling their eyes — visions of pink laptops, fuzzy blackberries, and heart shaped cell phones. Spare me. Women are a force to be reckoned with, and there is something here for every gadget lover.

Some of my new favorites:

  • Shiny Shiny: A great collaboration of different sites. Celebrates the latest gadgets, and often includes reviews and where to buy. Also cool British gadget sneak peaks!
  • Popgadget: Includes a list of other sites that work for women and gadgets. Great how-to and reviews written by women!
  • Chip Chick: What makes it great? Chip Chick Hispano for all our Spanish speaking friends, and Chip Chicklets a site devoted to children’s gadgets. I just love that they are thinking about how a variety of different audiences use technology.
  • Techie Diva: Again a kick ass collection of fun goodies.
  • Women’s Technology Blogs: A small, but quality of lists of these kinds of websites. Support their work!

Ok, I do have a few critiques.

  1. American women are responsible for 50 billion dollars of gadget spending. You would think with that kind of money behind women and technology that there would be a greater discussion of the issue, but if you search for “women gadgets technology” in Google News you get articles about the “kama sutra worm”, Gadgets to help with golf and cellulite, etc. There needs to be a better discussion of this issue.
  2. There is a difference between girls and women! I love that there are a variety of companies and websites are thinking about what women need, and what they want in terms of technology. However, the needs of girls and professional women are different!!! A lot of these sites combine us all into one group. Contrary for popular belief I actually do not want my phone to be pink or hello kitty, don’t need my usb flash drive to look like lipstick, and although vibrators are in fact gadgets — that’s not quite what I had in mind.

So can we move beyond the stereotype of girls as pink docile sex kittens — and treat them like intelligent, professional, graceful women who love gadgets not just as women, but as people.

Get it?
